On this day in history, Thursday, April 4, 1968 human and civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jnr, was killed by a sniper. The civil rights leader was confirmed dead after emergency surgery failed to bring him back to life. The incident happened on the balcony outside his room at the Lorraine motel in Memphis, Tennessee, as he leaned over the rail.
The Federal Bureau of
Investigation (FBI) and police command in Memphis later found a rifle and
telescope in a house across the street from the motel he was staying. The
evidence made the FBI and police come to the conclusion that only one person
was involved in the assassination.
It should be recalled
that King was in Memphis to lead a march in solidarity with the city’s
sanitation workers who were on strike. The news of the assassination caused riots
in cities like Washington and Chicago as thousands of federal troops were
deployed contain the situation all around the country.
Meanwhile, sources earlier reported
that the US Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs
(ECA) said Nigerians and other international students contributed 42.4 billion
dollars to the U. S. economy in 2017/2018 session.
A senior official of
the Bureau, who spoke on condition of anonymity, announced this during the Tour
of the U.S. Community Colleges and Workforce Development programme in
Washington D.C on Saturday, March 30.
The tour was organised
by the Foreign Press Centre, Bureau of Public Affairs, U.S. Department of State
to provide foreign journalists with information on opportunity available to
foreign students in community college in U.S.
